HOW DO STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED CALDERWOOD SEMINARS
USE THE SKILLS THEY ACQUIRED?
Student Publications
Every student completes a writing portfolio by the end of the course, providing a ready supply of writing samples
that might be used when applying for an internship or job. Some students take the next step and submit a piece for
publication in a blog, newspaper, or other outlet. Recently published student work includes:
- Taylor Church, Supporting First Responders Means Much More than Pulling Over When You Hear a Siren, The Bangor Daily News (December 9, 2025)
- Tareq Alotaiba, Analysis: How the UAF sees AI, SEMAFOR (May 15, 2025)
- Chantal Valdivia-Moreno, We owe it to ourselves and our community to defend science, The Star News (March 28, 2025)
- Emily Sorkin, Does J.D. Vance Know Anything about European Democracy or Security, Small Wars Journal (February 28, 2025)
- Nysaa Youhn, Trump and Kennedy put US agriculture at risk – again, Climate and Capital Media (January 28, 2025)
In addition, there are public-facing blogs, hosted by Calderwood Seminar in Public Writing courses, that publish student work, including:

Students who complete Calderwood Seminars tell us that skills they acquired have proven invaluable. The students
profiled below tell us how important their writing, editing, and communication skills are as a research analyst at the
Center for Security and Emerging Technology; in securing a Mellon Foundation grant to pursue environmental
research; as practicing journalists; and even just talking to their families about the work that engages them.
Funding may be available to support a pilot program at your institution.
